The Environmental Noise Directive required the Welsh Government to produce noise maps in 2012 for major roads, for major railways and for roads, railways and industry in agglomerations. This data package contains all the sound level contours calculated in 2012, in 5-decibel “A-weighted” contour bands. It also contains spatial data on the sources modelled (the major roads, major railways, agglomerations and industrial sites in agglomerations) and designated areas relevant to noise action planning. The maps are due to be reviewed, and some may be revised, in 2017. Note: (1) Although described as noise maps for the purposes of the Directive, it would be more correct to call these sound maps. The term noise refers to unwanted or harmful sound. (2) The values are calculated, not measured, and should be treated with caution when looking at specific locations. (3) Human response to industrial noise is highly dependent on the nature of the sound being heard and on the level of masking by road traffic, and these factors are not reflected in the industrial noise maps, making them of limited practical value to regulators. More details can be found here

Road traffic noise (for major roads) LA10,18h: indicates the average of the sound levels exceeded for 10% of each hour over the 18-hour period from 0600 to 2400. Not identical to the LA10,18h indicator used in the Noise Insulation Regulations, as these values are calculated at a height of 4 metres and do not include façade reflections. Lday: indicates the average sound level for the 12-hour period from 0700 to 1900. Lden: indicates the average sound level around the clock with extra weighting given to the evening and night periods. Levening: indicates the average sound level for the 4-hour period from 1900 to 2300. Lnight: indicates the average sound level for the 8-hour period from 2300 to 0700. Similar to the LAeq,8h indicator used in TAN11 assessments, but here calculated at a height of 4 metres rather than 1.2-1.5 metres. LAeq,16h: indicates the average sound level for the 16-hour period from 0700 to 2300. Similar to the LAeq,16h indicator used in TAN11 assessments, but here calculated at a height of 4 metres rather than 1.2-1.5 metres. Industrial noise (for industry in agglomerations) Lday: indicates the average noise level for the 12-hour period from 0700 to 1900. Lden: indicates the average noise level around the clock with extra weighting given to the evening and night periods. Levening: indicates the average noise level for the 4-hour period from 1900 to 2300. Lnight: indicates the average noise level for the 8-hour period from 2300 to 0700. Supplementary data sets Industry: Industrial sites identified in 2016 as operating under Part A environmental permits, and located within or just outside an agglomeration. Major roads: roads identified in 2016 as having more than 3 million vehicle passages per year.
This dataset provides details of permit details as required under the Environmental Permit Regulations issued for the disposal of waste sheep dip to land. The data come from Natural Resources Wales Public Register. The published datasets only include permits with an "Effective" status; revoked, expired, or surrendered permits are not included. The Environmental Permitting Regulations, amongst other things, implement the IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive (EC/61/96) in England and Wales. Facilities covered by this legislation are known as Installations and generally have significant releases to air, land or water, or carry out certain, larger scale, waste management activities. This dataset covers all Process Industry sites within the EPR regime and some larger waste activities. Other smaller waste facilities are known as 'Waste Operations' (formerly known as Waste Management Licences) and are covered in a separate dataset. Waste management licence is a legal document issued under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. A licence authorises the treatment, keeping or disposal of waste in or on the land. Once we have issued a licence, neither the activities nor the area of land may be changed unless the licence is modified. The Environmental Permitting Regulations, regulating waste sites, came into force on 6 April 2008 and combines a number of earlier permitting / licensing regimes. Under the Environment (Wales) Act (2016), Section 7 requires biodiversity lists to be produced. These lists include types of habitats which are of "Principle Importance" for the purpose of maintain and enhancing biodiversity in relation to Wales. This list supersedes the duty in Section 42 of the NERC Act 2006. In addition to this marine habitats can be protected under the OSPAR Convention, which has established a list of "threatened and/or declining species and habitats" in the North-East Atlantic. This spatial dataset details the extent and location of those marine habitats classed of "Principle Importance" under Section 7 and are regarded as "threatened or declining" under OSPAR in Wales. Habitats include: Carbonate Reefs, Estuarine Rock, Honeycomb Worm Sabellaria alveolata, Intertidal Underboulder, Mud habitats in deep water, Musculus Discors Green crenella Beds, Blue Mussel Beds (listed under OSPAR aswell), Fragile Sponge and Anthozoans (listed under OSPAR aswell), Horse Mussel Modiolus Bed (listed under OSPAR aswell), Intertidal Mudflats (listed under OSPAR aswell), Maerl Beds live and dead (listed under OSPAR aswell), Sabellaria spinulosa reef (listed under OSPAR aswell), Saline Lagoons (listed under OSPAR aswell), Saltmarsh, Seagrass Beds (listed under OSPAR aswell), Seapens And Burrowing Megafauna (listed under OSPAR aswell), Peat Clay Exposures (listed under OSPAR aswell), Sheltered Muddy Gravel (listed under OSPAR aswell), Subtidal Mix Mud Sediments (listed under OSPAR aswell), Tide Swept Channels (listed under OSPAR aswell), Oyster Beds (OSPAR only). Anyone wishing to fell trees must ensure that a licence or permission under a grant scheme has been issued by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) before any felling is carried out or that one of the exceptions apply. The applicant would normally need to get permission from the NRW to fell growing trees. This is usually given in a Felling Licence or an approval under a Dedication Scheme. This dataset provides a record of all approved Felling License Applications in Wales and type of license approved.
